About Wynton Rufer

  • Born 29 December 1962
  • Began playing career with Wellington United
  • Debuted for All Whites on October 16th, 1980
  • Young Player of the Year in 1981 and 1982
  • First Kiwi footballer to sign an international contract
  • Joined FC Zurich in May 1982
  • Helped All Whites make the 1982 FIFA World Cup at 19 years of age (The youngest squad member)
  • Played for FC Aarau (Switzerland), FC Grasshoppers, Werder Bremen (Germany), 1. FC Kaiserslautern and JEF United (Japan)
  • Joint top scorer with Ronald Koeman in the 1993-1994 UEFA Champions League
  • Voted Oceania's Player of the Year in 1989, 1990 and 1992
  • Wore the All White strip 39 times (23 were full A-international caps in which he scored 12 goals)
  • Retired in 2001 after coaching stints with North Shore United, national Under-16 squad, FC Kingz ((later Auckland Kingz)
  • Named Oceania Footballer of the Century
  • Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to soccer, 2008 Queen's Birthday Honours
  • Has founded a football coaching school - Wynrs
